Newcastle United vs. Liverpool

Saturday, February 18, 2023 – 12:30 PM EST at St. James ParkSt. James’ Park

Newcastle United

Newcastle enters a rare moment in history when facing Liverpool this weekend, as Eddie Howe and company will represent a Magpies squad that’s five or more places above their opponents in the standings for the first time since 2006.

As Klopp’s horrific campaign continues, the Magpies are flying high. Not only do they boast the best defensive record in the EPL – with just 17 goals conceded – they’re also on track to beat the club-record undefeated streak if they can avoid a loss on Saturday.

Positioned nine points behind their weekend opponents in the EPL standings, Liverpool’s only hope of Champions League football next season could rely on them winning the UCL competition this year. A loss to the Magpies on Saturday would leave a twelve-point gap from fourth place and a Europa League qualification spot may be the only achievable success for Jurgen Klopp’s men if they cannot fix their current downtrend in form.

The good news for Klopp and company is that Liverpool is the only team to defeat Newcastle this season. However, they’ll need to be wary of the Magpies’ home form which has seen Eddie Howe’s men stay unbeaten at St. James Park all season.

Liverpool’s most recent road trips have provided three consecutive defeats with three goals conceded in each of those meetings. Defensively, whether they can win this contest or not, we should expect Newcastle to easily penetrate this Reds defense.

Pick and Prediction

A returning Callum Wilson will provide sure firepower for the Magpies following his absence from last week’s game. The England representative has netted 5 goals from his previous 7 home game appearances and with a squad position at Wembley next weekend, he’ll undoubtedly want to make his presence known.

Liverpool can also add to the score sheet, as Jurgen Klopp’s men have averaged 1.7 goals per game. Despite their poor form, they still possess one of the most dangerous strikers in Europe, Mohamed Salah.

We expect both teams to utilize their forward pressure and find the best, and considering Liverpool fixtures have seen over 2.5 goals achieved in 80% of their away games thus far, three or more goals for both teams combined is reachable.

Borussia Monchengladbach vs. Bayern Munich

Saturday, February 18, 2023 – 09:30 AM EST at Borussia-Park

Borussia Monchengladbach

After suffering a 4-1 dismantling to basement dwellers Hertha Berlin last time, putting faith in Borussia Monchengladbach to get a result against the German champions this weekend isn’t a promising stance to be in.

Since Daniel Farke took the position as M’bach manager, he’s lost a whopping 40% of domestic meetings, and given their current form, this number will likely rise a few percent after Bayern has left Borussia-Park.

All hope isn’t lost for Fakre as the reverse fixture earlier this term saw Die Fohlen collect one point from the Allianz Arena. But taking points from the Bavarians in consecutive meetings will be a difficult ask, whether they have a home advantage or not.

Bayern Munich

Post-World Cup, the Bavarians delivered three consecutive Bundesliga draws and this haltered their runaway efforts at the summit. On the brighter side, they’ve since reasserted their authority after that rough patch and enter the weekend fixture behind four consecutive wins in all competitions.

With that said, there’s no rest for the wicked. Borussia Dortmund and Union Berlin are chasing Bayern for the Bundesliga top spot, so, Julian Nagelsmann won’t be letting his foot off the gas for M’bach despite a DFB-Pokal and Champions League schedule ahead.

Pick and Prediction

Head-to-head, Gladbach has always put up a noteworthy performance against Germany’s most accomplished club, but their current form is worrying, and Bayern can capitalize with a victory.

However, based on past performances, we do expect the home side to find a consolation goal and cause some troublesome moments for their visitors before Bayern return to Munich with a full three points.
