Breaking Down The Oklahoma Sooners

The Oklahoma Sooners are rolling as they have won their last seven games in a row after a rough 1-2 start. They have nearly been unstoppable on offense over that stretch, while their defense has played better of late. They have it going right now and a win in this game will give them an 8-0 mark in conference play so far and if Oklahoma State Loses their game at TCU this week then the Sooners will clinch the Big 12 Title. If both teams win then it will set up a winner take all game next week between the Sooners and Cowboys. Baker Mayfield has had a solid season for the Sooners as he has thrown for 3212 yards with 33 TDs and just 7 INTs so far. His favorite target has been Dede Westbrook, who has 1254 yards receiving and 15 TDs. He is tied for 4th in the nation in receiving yards. Westbrook and Mayfield have led an offense that comes in ranked 3rd in the nation in total offense, 10th in passing, 27th in rushing and 9th in scoring, putting up  44.2 ppg. It will not be easy for them to put up big numbers this week vs an underrated Mountaineer defense. On that side of the ball, the Sooners have been better of late as they have allowed just 321.3 ypg and 17 ppg over their last three games. Still, overall they are 81st in total yards allowed, 121st vs the pass, 30th vs the run and 82nd in points allowed, giving up 30.8 ppg. That defense will be tested vs a very good West Virginia offense.

Breaking Down The West Virginia Mountaineers

West Virginia was pegged for a lower half finish in the Big 12 this year, but they have had a heck of a year so far as they are 8-1 overall, including 5-1 in the Big 12. The Mountaineers lone loss was at Oklahoma State or they would be playing for a shot at reaching the NCAA Playoffs. They still might be, but the lack of a title game in the Big 12 will hurt their cause should they win out. They do have an outside shot at the Big 12 title, but they have to win out and hope that the Cowboys fall at Oklahoma in the last game of the season. WVA has gone a perfect 5-0 at home and have outgained those foes by 128 ypg and outscored them by 16.8 ppg. Skyler Howard has led this offense as he has thrown for 2562 yards with 17 TDs and nine INTs and he will take aim at a very weak Oklahoma pass defense. He also knows how to run the ball as he has 274 yards rushing and 6 more TDs on the year. He has really turned into a good QB and leads an offense that comes in ranked 19th in total offense 25th in passing, 34th in rushing and 47th in scoring, putting up 37.2 ppg so far. On defense they have been very underrated this year and, while they have given up-0 some yards, they haven’t given up many points. WVA comes in ranked 64th in total yards allowed, 89th vs the pass, 51st vs the run and 19th in points allowed, giving up just 20.6 ppg. This defense will have a tough test vs an Oklahoma offense that has been very tough to stop this year.

Trends: The Sooners have gone 10-4 ATS in their last 14 conference games and 16-7 ATS in their last 23 games after allowing more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game, but just 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games after scoring more than 40 points in their previous game and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS win. The Over is 21-6-1 in their last 28 games on fieldturf, while the Under is 5-2 in their last 7 games after scoring more than 40 points in their previous game.

The Mountaineers have gone 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games in November, but just 4-11 ATS vs. a team with a winning record and 6-20 ATS in their last 26 home games vs. a team with a winning road record. The Over is 4-1 the last five games in this series, while the Under is 22-5 in their last 27 games on fieldturf.
