The Bears are entering this matchup after an upset win over the 49ers, while the Packers were getting trounced by their NFC North rival from Minnesota in the opening week of the season.

Let’s discuss this matchup and decide which team to include in our NFL picks!

Chicago Bears vs. Green Bay Packers

Sunday, September 18, 2022 – 8:20 PM EDT at Lambeau Field

About Last Week

The new Bermuda grass that was installed shortly before opening day could not fully absorb the torrential rains that turned Soldier Field into a rain-soaked track, causing plenty of slipping and sliding throughout Chicago’s season opener.

The Bears were even flagged for a penalty when trying to dry the ball and the field before a field goal attempt.

However, it all worked out just fine for the new regime in the Windy City as the Bears roared back from a 10-0 deficit to score 19 unanswered points against the 49ers and pull an unlikely 19-10 upset over a team many consider to be a Super Bowl contender. Justin Fields was just 8-of-17 for 121 yards with a pair of touchdowns and one interception.

“Coach always says it’s mental and physical stamina,” Fields said. “Who can play the longest, the hardest, and just play every play. We won this game with mental and physical stamina.”

Packers Bow in Debut

Many believed the NFL odds being offered at many of the best online sportsbooks had the wrong favorite in the Packers/Vikings game. Minnesota was favored by two points, but the Packers have been perennial division champs and Aaron Rodgers was one of the preseason MVP favorites.

Last year, it was no contest as Green Bay cruised to another NFC North title with a 13-4 record while the Vikings were on the outside looking in when the playoffs came around due to their unremarkable 8-9 mark.

However, it was obvious from the beginning that the Vikings came to play and when the smoke cleared, Minnesota gave their fans something to cheer about when they defeated their archrivals, 23-7, and momentarily reside in first place in the NFC North.

Packers Offense Lacked Reinforcements

The Packers’ offense never clicked as Rodgers went 22-of-34 for just 195 yards, no touchdowns, and one pick while Aaron Jones was Green Bay’s leading rusher with just 49 yards.

But to be fair, Rodgers played without two of his starting linemen and was without one of his top targets in Allen Lazard.

“There’s expectation for whoever’s in there, that they’re going to play well. We had a lot of chances today. I’m not taking anything away from their defense, but we hurt ourselves many times, myself included,” said Rodgers.

What Should We Expect From This Matchup?

I know the conventional wisdom will be that the Packers will be on a rampage after their dismal performance and will take their frustrations out on a much weaker rival like the Bears.

And although Chicago did slay a dragon in the 49ers, the weather conditions were atrocious, they got a couple of breaks, and it won’t happen two weeks in a row, especially against a team with Super Bowl aspirations that will desperately want to atone for its opening day loss.

Well, I’ve got news for you. I don’t think Green Bay is all that good simply because they lack weapons. Aaron Rodgers is the real deal but who does he have to throw to after Davante Adams took the money and ran to Vegas?

And if Rodgers’ personal bodyguard, David Bakhtiari, doesn’t return to his blindside tackle position this week after being sidelined with a knee injury, then Rodgers will have plenty of company in the backfield.

Our Betting Pick

Although I’m not convinced the Bears are anything more than a grittier edition of their previous selves, I do believe they can hang and bang with the Packers, especially when getting 9 ½ points from many of the best U.S. licensed online sportsbooks.
