Breaking Down The Nebraska Cornhuskers

The Nebraska Cornhuskers have been a pleasant surprise in college football this year as they are 7-1 so far and ranked in the top 10 in the country. They are off their first loss of the year, but even in that game they played well as they lost by just 6 at Wisconsin in OT. Madison is a very tough place to play and it didn’t faze the Huskers at all. Now they have another tough road test and will be taking on an Ohio State team that hasn’t looked impressive of late. The Huskers have been led by a very solid defense that has held 6 of their 8 opponents to 17 points or less in regulation. THis defense overall comes in ranked 20th in total yards allowed, 37th vs the pass, 37th vs the run and 15th in points allowed, giving up just 18.4 ppg. It will be tested against a good Ohio State offense that has struggled of late, but is still very good. The offense for the Huskers has been very solid so far as they come in ranked 48th in total offense, 74th in passing, 40th in rushing and 49th in passing. This offense is not spectacula and will need to be a bit better vs a very good Ohio State offense.

Breaking Down The Ohio State Buckeyes

The Ohio State Buckeyes suffered their 1st loss of the season at Penn State a few weeks ago and then last week they followed it up with a rather lackluster 24-20 home win over Northwestern. They were 27 point favorites in that game. Their last three games have been decided by 7 points or less and they have outgained those foes by just 27 ypg, compared to outgaining foes by 192 ypg for the season. The Buckeyes have really been led by their defense this year as they come in ranked 8th in the nation in yards allowed, 9th vs the pass, 29th vs the run and 6th in points allowed, giving up just 15.1 ppg. Very stout on this side of the ball and with their offense struggling of late they will need the defense to step up here. JT Barrett has been solid this year with 17 TD passes and just 4 INTs, but they have gotten away from their downfield passing game and he has thrown for just 3 TDs in his last 4 games, while throwing 2 INTs over the same stretch. That will have to change here vs a good Nebraska defense or they could be in for another unexpectedly close game. Overall this offense is 20th in total yards, 77th in passing, 8th in rushing and 10th in scoring, putting up 42.6 ppg.

Trends: The Cornhuskers have gone 14-3 ATS in their last 17 road games and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games vs. a team with a winning home record, but just 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS win. The Over is 4-0 in their last 4 games following a straight-up loss, while the Under is 7-0 in their last 7 conference games.

The Buckeyes have gone 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games after accumulating more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game, but just 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games following a ATS loss and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games in November. The Under is 14-4 in their last 18 games following a straight up win.
