The Miami Dolphins are still alive for a playoff berth, but now they must fight for that spot without QB Ryan Tannehill, who has been lost for an extended period of time. Saturday night they head to MetLife Stadium to battle the New York Jets, who have no shot at the postseason party and will be missing Matt Forte for this game. This game has a start time of 8:25 pm EST.
Vegas odds have the Dolphins listed as 2 point favorites, while the total has been set at 38. This contest will be televised on NFLN with a start time of 8:25 pm EST.
Breaking Down The Miami Dolphins
Last week, the Miami Dolphins picked up a huge home win over Arizona, but they also lost QB Ryan Tannehill in the process. The good news was that it was just an ACL/MCL sprain and not a tear, but still he is out for at least a few weeks. That puts a serious dent in their quest for their first playoff appearance since 2008. Matt Moore came in last week and led them to victory and the dolphins will have to rely on he until Tannehill comes back. Moore hit 3 of 5 passes last week for 47 yards and led Miami to their game winning FG drive. More has started 25 games in his career and is 13-12 in those games and he has just a 79.4 QBR in his career. The Dolphins will probably have to rely on the run game even more and they have been led by Jay Ajayi, who has run for 956 yards, which is 10th in the league. The Dolphins have not been a good offensive team this year as they come in ranked, 26th in total yar5ds, 27th in passing, 12th in rushing and 20th in scoring, putting up 21.6 ppg. The defensive number have not been great either as they are ranked 25th in total yards allowed. 10th vs the pass, 30th vs the run and 18th in points allowed, giving up 23.2 ppg. Poor offense and a below average defense. How is this team currently holding down one of the wildcard spots?
Trends: The Dolphins have gone 4-1 ATS in their last 5 vs. the AFC and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS win, but just 10-25-1 ATS the last 36 games in this series and 1-12 ATS in their last 13 games in December. The Over is 5-1 in their last 6 vs. a team with a losing record, while the Under is 12-4-1 in their last 17 games after allowing less than 150 yards passing in their previous game.
Breaking Down The New York Jets
The New York Jets have had a bad year so far, but they do come in off a 23-17 OT win over the Niners on the road. They trailed that game 17-3 at one point, but were able to come back for the win. The jets started the year with Ryan Fitzpatrick at QB, but he has the lowest QBR in the league of 70.7 and so they have turned to Bryce Petty and he hasn’t done a whole lot better as he has 2 TD and 4 INTs and a QBR of 65.6 so far in his 4 games played (2 starts). This is one of the worst offensive teams in the league and now their ground game took a hit as they lost Matt Forte in the last game and is expected to miss this one. He would have been huge vs a Miami team that is 30th in the league against the run. The Jets come in ranked 22nd in the league in total offense, 26th in passing, 10th in rushing and 29th in scoring, putting up just 17.6 ppg so far. The defense has really been a staple of this team over the years, but they have struggled on that side of the ball so far. They could have a decent showing in this one vs a Miami team that is down a QB and has a running game that has struggled of late. The Jets come in ranked 19th in total yards allowed, 22nd vs the pass, 17th vs the run and 24th in points allowed, giving up 24.9 ppg.
Trends: The Jets have gone 7-1-1 ATS in their last 9 games in December and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a winning road record, but just 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games following an ATS win, while the home team i9s 6-13-1 ATS the last 20 games in the series. The Over is 5-1 in their last 6 games after accumulating more than 150 yards rushing in their previous game, while the Under is 9-4 in their last 13 games in December.
