Serie A’s top two teams will lock horns for an eagerly anticipated Milan derby at the weekend. Who will come out on top for our soccer picks?
Internazionale FC vs. AC Milan FC
Saturday, February 5, 2022 – 12:00 PM EST at Giuseppe Meazza
Serie A leader Inter Milan opened up a four-point lead over title rival AC Milan by beating Venezia 2-1 in its last game. Simone Inzaghi’s men are unbeaten since October, and they now have 16 wins, five draws, and just one defeat from 22 games this season.
They have a game in hand on AC Milan, and victory on Saturday would make them the overwhelming favorites to successfully defend the Serie A crown they won last season. Inter is the top-scoring team in Serie A, having banged in 53 goals in 22 matches. It also has the second-best defensive record, with only 17 conceded.
AC Milan Lacks Inter’s Consistency
AC Milan has racked up 43 goals in 23 games, which is the league’s second-highest goals tally. It is level with Napoli on 49 points apiece, and they look like the only teams with a realistic chance of catching Inter. Milan has 15 wins, four draws, and four losses so far this season.
The Rossoneri have conceded 25 times, which is the third-best record in the league, but a slightly leaky defense has cost them at times. They suffered a damaging 2-1 defeat to struggling Spezia on January 17, followed by a 0-0 draw with Juventus.
AC Milan and Inter share a stadium, but the team that is ostensibly playing at home is allocated the bulk of the tickets, so Inter fans will be out in full force on Saturday. Milan was the home team when they met earlier this season.
It ended in a 1-1 back in November. Hakan Çalhanoğlu, who controversially left AC Milan to join Inter on a free transfer last summer, opened the scoring for the Nerazzurri, but Milan struck back when Stefan de Vrij scored an own-goal.
The team that was ostensibly playing at home lost both games last season – a 2-1 win for AC Milan in October 2020 and a 3-0 win for Inter in February 2021. However, Inter dominates the recent history between these teams. It has seven wins, four draws, and just one defeat from seven Milan derbies since the start of the 2016-17 season.
On Friday, Inter signed wing-back Robin Gosens on loan from Atalanta to boost its title bid in the second half of the campaign. However, he is currently injured, and he may not recover in time to make his debut in this game.
Argentinian forward Joaquin Correa is also injured for Inter, but it has a clean bill of health apart from that. Lautaro Martinez, Edin Dzeko, and Alexis Sánchez are all vying for a place in attack, while Çalhanoğlu will be keen to pile more misery on his former employer.
AC Milan will be without star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who previously played for Inter, as he has an ACL injury. Defender Fikayo Tomori is also out with a knee injury, and midfielder Franck Kessié is at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Inter has looked extremely impressive over the past couple of months, while AC Milan has been inconsistent. The Nerazzurri should win this one.
