The Clemson Tigers will look to stretch their current winning streak to five games when they face the upstart Duke Blue Devils this Saturday night in Durham, NC. in this ACC inter-division tilt. Game time is set for 7 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2.
Clemson’s only setback of the season remains an 11-point loss to No.9 Florida State on Sept.22 as a 14.5-point road underdog. The Tigers hammered Wake Forest 42-13 this past Thursday night as 11.5-point road favorites to move to 7-1 straight up and 6-2 against the spread this season. The total has gone “over” in four of their last six games.
Duke came falling back down to earth last Saturday after its shocking upset of North Carolina the week before in a 48-7 loss to the Seminoles as a 27-point road underdog. The Blue Devils are now 6-3 on the season both SU and ATS. The total has gone over in six of their last eight games.
The Tigers have one of the most prolific passing offenses in the nation behind quarterback Tajh Boyd. The junior has already thrown for 2,336 yards and 20 touchdowns while completing an impressive 66.7 percent of his passes. He has also been a dual-threat with his legs by rushing for an additional 278 yards on the ground. Andre Ellington remains the team’s primary threat running the ball with 754 yards on a 150 attempts.
Clemson’s defense has also done a good job at keeping opponents out of the end zone, with the exception of the game against Florida State. If you take out those 49 points from its yearly total, this unit is giving up a little over 20 points a game.
The Blue Devils have put together one of their best seasons in recent memory and are already bowl eligible with their six wins. They also have a good shot at winning the ACC’s Coastal Division if they can win their last three games.
That may be a tall task with Clemson coming to town this week, but Duke has already shown the ability to win as a home underdog in SU wins over Virginia and North Carolina. If they are going to have any shot at getting past the Tigers, it will up to players such as quarterback Sean Renfree and wide receiver Conner Vernon, who have combined for 54 receptions and 761 yards so far this season.
Odds and Trends
Pointspread: Clemson -14
Total Line: OFF
The Tigers are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 conference games and 4-0 ATS in their last four games on the road. The total has stayed under in 15 of their last 21 games against the ACC.
The Blue Devils are a perfect 8-0 ATS in their last eight home games and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games following a SU loss. The total has gone over in six of their last seven conference games.
Head-to-head, the favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings but the home team is 8-1-1 ATS in the last 10 games between the two. The total has gone over in three of the last five games.
You have to give credit to Duke for pulling out a couple of impressive wins this season, but this will not be one of them. Clemson still has an outside shot at winning the ACC Atlantic Division if the Seminoles trip up somewhere along the line, so they will not come into Durham taking this game lightly. Look for the Tigers to eventual wear the Blue Devils down to secure the win by more than 14 points.
