Sports Options: By the numbers

Let’s take a look at some of the interesting odds-related numbers currently appearing in the Sports Options odds service:

Monday Night Mystery

Most sportsbooks had the 8-0 Green Bay Packers opening as 13.5-point home favorites versus the struggling 2-6 Minnesota Vikings in Monday Night Football. Some books opened at -14.

Over the course of the week, public money has piled-in on the Packers. As of 10:45 a.m. PT Monday morning, 68 percent of the public betting action was on Green Bay, according to the Sports Options odds service.

With that amount of money coming in on the Packers, one would expect the line to rise. Instead, it has fallen to about 13 points at most books.

A similar movement has occurred on the total, which opened at 51 to 51.5 points at most books. Public money has poured in on the OVER, but rather than increase to entice bettors to take the under, the total has dipped to 49.5 at most books.

Both movements have triggered what are called “Moves vs. Public” System Plays in the Sports Options odds service: Take Minnesota +13.5 and the UNDER 49.5.

Sports Options offers five types of System Plays, all of which are available to subscribers.

Digging Detroit’s dogs

On the college hardwood tonight, 1-0 Detroit visits South Bend to take on 1-0 Notre Dame in the CBE Classic (6 p.m. PT, ESPNU).

The Fighting Irish opened as 10-point home favorites and the total checked in at 145.5. Public money has piled-in on Detroit, with 87 percent taking the underdog Titans as of 11:10 a.m. PT. The action pushed the number down to 7 points at most online sportsbooks.

In their season opener, the Titans pounded Lake Erie 95-57 on home court. Senior G Chase Simon led the way with 24 points while senior G Nick Minnerath added 23.

The Irish, meanwhile, knocked off visiting Mississippi Valley State 80-67 in their season opener. Sophomore G Eric Atkins led the way with a career-high 27 points.

The high scoring in both openers may help explain why the public likes the OVER in this matchup. The total opened at 145.5, but with 85 percent of the public money taking the OVER, that number has dropped to 143.
