Kentucky Derby 137 Betting Preview

Kentucky Derby 137 logoRain is in the forecast for Saturday’s 137th running of the Kentucky Derby which makes what is considered a wide open race even more difficult to predict (6:24 p.m. ET, NBC).

Seventeen horses are listed with odds of 10-1 or more so even the oddsmakers don’t know what to expect. Dialed In is the 4-1 opening favorite at

Dialed In is trained by Nick Zito and starts from post No. 8 but favorites rarely win the Derby and no horse with just four career starts has won the Derby since 1918.

The buzz horse this week has been Nehro and that means the horse has almost no chance to win because the hot pick in the Derby is almost always a loser.

Archarcharch would be an interesting choice in the Kentucky Derby but he is stuck on the rail and no betting horse has won the Derby from the rail in 25 years.

Twice the Appeal is 20-1 and if he didn’t have Calvin Borel in the irons he would probably be 50-1 because the horse isn’t very good.

Pants on Fire is also 20-1 and he is getting some attention as his win in the Louisiana Derby is looking better and better based on some of the other prep races for the Kentucky Derby. Female jockey Rosie Napravnik is very good and she will not be intimidated by the big stage.

Master of Hounds is the European invader and he does get Garrett Gomez to ride. He is not without a chance at 30-1.

Mucho Macho Man is an interesting horse for trainer Kathy Ritvo. The horse is consistent and has some value at 12-1.

Shackleford is another interesting choice at 12-1 as he is getting some attention on the odds board for trainer Dale Romans.

Midnight Interlude is 10-1 for trainer Bob Baffert but he doesn’t seem ready to win away from California.

Animal Kingdom
has been training very well this week on the dirt and has a chance to surprise at long odds and watch out for Soldat if the track is muddy as he loves to run in the mud.

There is not much to like about Brilliant Speed, Stay Thirsty, Decisive Moment, Comma to the Top, Derby Kitten, Twinspired or Santiva, and Watch Me Go shouldn’t even be in this prestigious race.
