Hoops Picks for Wednesday

#705 Take Brooklyn/Boston UNDER 191 (7:30 p.m. EST)

We think it is very telling that the bookies have not made a major adjustment to this line after the teams played a 102-97 barnburner on Nov. 15. Boston has uncharacteristically been giving up lots of points so far this season, allowing more than 100 per game. This team is going to get it together on defense at some point and tonight should be as good a time as any against a Nets offense that is not very explosive. The Nets have had success on the court with four wins in the six games since playing the Celtics, but it has not been because of an offense that is averaging less than 94 PPG during that span and has not hit the century mark during that slate. They have allowed less than 90 PPG on defense during this time. The Nets really rely on their defense to frustrate the opponent and their offense really slows the game down with a lot of half-court sets. With the result of the last meeting fresh in the public’s mind we think that the books are begging for action on the over here. Although Boston has been allowing a lot of points we think both teams make adjustments from the previous game and much of the focus will be on the defensive side of the ball.

Take #752 SMU over Utah (8 p.m. EST)

The Larry Brown Era is underway in Dallas, as he is now the coach of the SMU Mustangs. His team is 6-1 on the season and getting it done on both ends of the court, as they are shooting 48 percent from the field. Utah is 4-1 on the season, but all five of those games came at home, and this includes a loss to Sacramento State. They have played a very easy schedule thus far, and most of the talent from last year’s team remains on the roster. And that does not bode well since they were 6-25 in 2011-2012. Lay the wood with the better team tonight since they are at home and will pull away in the second half to win this game comfortably.
