Cotton Bowl Betting Preview: Texas A&M vs. LSU

AT&T Cotton Bowl logoIn a matchup of longtime rivals, No. 18 Texas A&M (9-3 SU, 7-4 ATS) takes on No. 11 LSU (10-2 SU, 5-6 ATS) on Friday night in the AT&T Cotton Bowl (8:00 p.m. ET, FOX).

The rivalry dates all the way back to 1899, although the two teams haven’t played each other since 1995. The Aggies have won the last five meetings.

LSU is listed as a 2-point favorite at SBGGlobal.com and the total is set at 49. On the moneyline, the Tigers are -130 and the Aggies are +110.

Texas A&M ended the season red-hot as they won their last six games. The main reason for the Aggies’ late success was quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who took over for the benched Jerrod Johnson. Tannehill completed 65.1 percent of his passes for 1,409 yards with 11 touchdowns in the last six games.

It was also helpful when Cyrus Gray took over as the starting running back. Gray had more than 100 yards in each of his last six games. A&M also has some defensive talent led by linebacker Von Miller who won the Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker.

LSU, meanwhile, is led by running back Steven Ridley, who rushed for 1,042 yards and 14 TDs this season – fourth most in the SEC.

For the Tigers to win on Friday, they’ll need a big game from Ridley, especially since LSU has a weak passing attack. The Tigers were 107th in the country in passing yards behind quarterbacks Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee.

LSU does have a very good defense though – the Tigers were No. 8 in yards allowed (301.7 ypg) and No. 9 in scoring defense (17.8 ppg). The is LSU secondary is led by cornerback Patrick Peterson, who won the Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation’s top defensive player.
