College Basketball Betting Preview: Purdue at Ohio St.

Ohio State Buckeyes logoThe best game on the betting board in college basketball on Tuesday takes place in Columbus as No. 1 Ohio State hosts No. 14 Purdue in a Big Ten showdown (9:00 p.m. ET, ESPN).

There are not that many games on Ohio State’s schedule that could be difficult but this is one of them. The Boilermakers might be the one team that can give top-ranked Ohio State a game.

Ohio St. is listed as a 7.5-point home favorite at and the total is 136. On the moneyline, the Buckeyes are -335; the Boilers are +275.

Purdue (17-3 SU, 11-5 ATS) has some talented players who could give Ohio State trouble including emerging guard Lewis Jackson, who had a career-high 19 points in Saturday’s win over Michigan State.

Not to be left out of the discussion for Purdue are F-C JaJuan Johnson (20.5 ppg) and G E’Twaun Moore (18 ppg), both of whom are All-American candidates.

Ohio State comes into Tuesday’s game at 20-0 overall (9-8 ATS) and 7-0 in the Big Ten. Despite that stellar record, the Buckeyes are only a game ahead of the Boilermakers, who are 6-1 SU in conference play.

Purdue was able to win at Ohio State last season. That was the last time the Buckeyes lost at home. Actually it is the only home loss for the Buckeyes in the last two years. Since that home loss to Purdue the Buckeyes have won 16 straight at home.

Even though the Buckeyes are winning straight up at home they have not been kind to backers; OSU is just 5-6 ATS in Columbus this season. This is partly a result of the national attention paid to OSU and a No. 1 ranking. Such attention leads to inflated pointspreads.

A big reason for the No. 1 ranking is freshman 6-foot-9 F Jared Sullinger, who leads the team in scoring (17.8 ppg) and rebounds (10.2). With Sullinger leading the way, Ohio State is No. 21 in the country in scoring (79 ppg) and No. 6 best in defense (57.2 ppg).
