Breaking Down The Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers were in the Super Bowl last year, but will probably be missing the playoffs this year. They have gone just 4-7 so far and are looking like a shell of the team they had last year, in which they went 15-1 during the regular season. They are off a hard-fought 35-32 loss at Oakland and have now gone just 1-4 on the road. Four of their five road games this year have been decided by three points or less. This one may be a tough game for them as the Seahawks are off an embarrassing 14-5 loss to Tampa Bay. The Panthers come in as a rather average offensive team as they come in ranked 14th in total yards, 19th in passing, 13th in rushing and 10th in scoring, putting up 25.1 ppg so far. They will need a bit better performance from their offense in this one as they will not be taking on an average defense. Last year Cam Newton was 8th in the league in QBR at 99.4, but this year he is 27th at 81.6. A big reason for their struggles on offense. The defense has really struggled as well this year and comes in ranked 17th in total yards allowed, 29th vs the pass, 2nd vs the run and 24th in points allowed, giving up 25.5 ppg. The Seahawks put up just five points last week on a bad Tampa Bay defense, so there is hope here that they will be able to slow down the Seahawks.

Trends: The Panthers have gone 9-2-1 ATS in their last 12 games after allowing more than 250 yards passing in their previous game and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games after allowing more than 30 points in their previous game, but just 1-7-1 ATS in their last 9 road games and 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 games after allowing more than 350 total yards in their previous game. The Over is 12-3 in their last 15 vs. a team with a winning record, while the Under is  5-2 in their last 7 games in December.

Breaking Down The Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks really had a clunker last week as they fell 14-5 to Tampa Bay. They were able to gain just 245 yards of total offense in the loss and that was vs a bad Tampa Bay defense. The offense has been a problem for the Seahawks for much of the year and a big reason has been a poor ground game, which is not something the Seahawks have been used to. Christine Michael leads the team in rushing with 469 yards, but he is no longer on the team and is now a part of the Green Bay Packers. Thomas Rawls is back and has just 120 yards so far and he will get a lot of work with CJ Prosise out of action. They could also use more help from Russell Wilson, who has run for just 159 yards so far after rushing for 533 last year and 849 yards the year before. Overall, this offense comes in ranked 17th in total yards 14th in passing, 27th in rushing and 23rd in scoring, putting up 20.4 ppg so far. The Seahawks have again been led by their defense, which comes in ranked 7th in total yards allowed, 10th vs the pass, 15th vs the run and 1st in points allowed, giving up just 17 ppg. They will really need their defense to play well here, especially vs a Carolina offense that can put some points on the board.

Trends:  The Seahawks have gone 10-1 ATS in their last 11 games in Week 13 and 20-8 ATS in their last 28 games following a straight up loss, but just 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games after accumulating less than 250 total yards in their previous game and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games after allowing less than 15 points in their previous game. The Over is 7-2 in Seahawks last 9 games after accumulating less than 150 yards passing in their previous game, while the Under is 12-2 in Seahawks last 14 games in December.
