2011 Preakness Betting Preview

The 136th running of the Preakness Stakes takes place on Saturday with Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom the 2-1 morning line favorite (6:25 p.m. ET, NBC). The three-year-old colt will race against 13 other horses in what is a full field.

Animal Kingdom will start from post position No. 11 and will run next to the race’s second choice, Dialed In, who opened at 9-2 on the morning line odds board. Dialed In will be racing from post position No. 10.

With John Velazquez at the reigns, Animal Kingdom will be looking to capture the middle leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown. The sport has not had a Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978 but if Animal Kingdom can win the Preakness he would have a good shot in the Belmont on June 11.

The Kentucky Derby was Animal Kingdom’s first start on dirt and he took to it very well. He has also looked sharp during preparations this week under the direction of trainer Graham Motion and appears to be ready for another big effort.

Dialed In, the second choice on the betting board, was a 5-1 favorite at the Kentucky Derby but was a major bust finishing eighth.

There is a ton of money on the line Dialed In’s trainer Nick Zito and the horse’s owners. The group will bag an extra $5.5 million if the horse wins the race. The cash is a bonus offered to a horse that wins two of Gulfstream Park’s three major 3-year-old stakes – the Holy Bull and Florida Derby.

Dialed In will be ridden by Frenchman Julien Leparoux.

The third choice on the Preakness odds board is Mucho Macho Man who was third in the Kentucky Derby. He is listed at 6-1 on the morning line and will start from post position No. 9.
